Polyphenols and Australian Judging Outcomes (again – but for the last time)
admin | September 14, 2010The results of the 2010 Royal Perth Extra Virgin Olive Oil Show were released last Saturday. The relationship between the quality scores awarded by the judges and the oils’ polyphenol levels are shown below. Given that polyphenol level is a good indicator of the robustness of an oil… well you get the idea.
While really mild oils were not represented in the gold medal category (17.0+), it was was a difficult year for many Australian producers with significant rainfall occurring just prior to harvest which resulted in reduced olive fruit flavours. These weather conditions presumably also made it more diffcult to achieve the subtlety and complexity in flavour that is a prerequisite of high quality gentle oils.
The last time I looked, the show results hadn’t been posted yet, but you should be able to find them shortly at http://www.oliveswa.com.au/useful-links/downloads/competition-results/
As Chairman of judges you can also read my overall impressions of the quality of the oils exhibited.
