Same old Same old – Lupi EVOO
admin | November 24, 2011And old is the key word here!
In my first review of extra virgin olive oils that can be purchased from Australian supermarkets,I reviewed Lupi Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Exactly five months on, I purchased the same brand from the same supermarket. Different batch of course.
My conclusion.
It was consistent with the previous purchase. In my opinion it was poor even by supermarket standards.
My measurement of Free Fatty Acidity: 0.68% cv 0.75% (last time around).
My measurement of K232 (primary oxidation) 1.94 cv 2.00
My measurement of K270 (secondary oxidation) 0.25 cv 0.22
Basically high end FFA suggesting sub-par quality olives, and high end secondary oxidation suggesting old or poorly stored oil. And I’m not necessarily blaming the supermarket either. It is a high turnover metropolitan supermarket. If the oil was bottled in italy in June 2011 and presumably took 8 weeks to reach Australia then it has only been stored here for 10 weeks.
It tasted the same: Stale with an over-ripe and tapendade flavour – just like before.
In July I couldn’t think of a use for this oil. I did for this batch
…… I gave it to someone who I didn’t particularly like.
The one other difference: Last time the label stated that the oil was blended atnd bottled in Italy from local (suggesting Italy, but who knows in this business) and Mediterranean olive oils. This year it was blended and bottled in Italy from Mediterranean olive oils.
And here are the details:
Package: 500ml clear glass with screwcap.
Batch no: L1226V H1435
Best before: 06/2013 suggesting bottled in 06/2011
Purchased; 18/11/2011, Woolworths Cumberland Park, South Australia
Price: No matter. It was way too much whatever it was.
